An A-Z of selected destinations in which Carey Tourism has a particular interest, including some of the 50+ countries in which Benjamin Carey has previously worked, together with examples of current activities and previous experience. Most links are to the official sites of public tourism organisations, whilst others are private enterprises.

Albania: Feasibility study for a large adventure sports centre, offering a range of products, including youth education, professional developing and ecolux accommodation, as well as rafting, climbing and canyoning. CT is currently building the capacity of DMOs across the country.
Armenia: Scoping exercise to explore tourism development opportunities with particular focus on heritage sites and cross-border protected areas.
Australia
Bangladesh: Benjamin Carey is currently leading the team developing a national tourism master plan.
Belize
Bhutan: Series of capacity building programmes on tourism marketing and sustainable business for tour operators and tourism managers.
Canada: CT has been advising pioneering tour operators on market recovery and sustainable development strategies.
Colombia
Croatia: As a tour operator, managed development of post-conflict holiday programmes, and subsequently designed and delivered capacity building programmes for tour operators and destination managers with a focus on cross-border and heritage tourism.
Cyprus: Having previously managed holiday programmes on Cyprus for leading UK tour operators, Benjamin has worked with a range of stakeholders on strategy.
Denmark
Egypt: Benjamin has previously managed holiday programmes in Egypt, including advising on market recovery in the aftermath of terrorist attacks; CT is currently supporting a community group in Cairo on the implementation of a small heritage tourism project.
England: CT is conducting a feasibility study for the development of a significant heritage site in Yorkshire.

France
Faroe Islands: A member of the National Geographic panel that selected the Faroes as the world’s most sustainable island destination, Benjamin gave a keynote at the subsequent conference that examined the future of tourism across the archipelago.
Georgia: Benjamin devised an ecotourism strategy for a series of national parks, including Borjomi-Kharagauli.
Guyana: Benjamin is advising on the strategic development of community-led tourism in South Rupununi.
India: A visitor since 1986, Benjamin has conducted multiple assignments throughout India, including ski tourism in Himachal Pradesh, community development in Karnataka, ecotourism in Odisha, co-operative tourism in Rajasthan, religious tourism in Uttar Pradesh and rural homestays in Uttarakhand. Recently, CT has been advising tour operators on social media strategies, pricing policies and market development plans.
Iran: Working with the British Council and the Department of Environment and universities in Iran, Benjamin designed and delivered a series of workshops and programmes to build capacity in the sustainable development of tourism and the management of tourism in protected areas.
Iraq: Benjamin advised the embryonic Tourism Board of Iraq on policy during a series of visits to Iraq and guided their return to World Travel Market, which was covered by media on six continents.
Jamaica: A partner of the Countrystyle Community Tourism Network, CT is supporting the development of community-based tourism initiatives across the Caribbean and beyond.
Jordan: CT is currently working with Petra National Trust and other international partners on heritage tourism in countries in the Middle East emerging from conflict. Previous experience in Jordan includes the development of practical guides for rural accommodation providers.
Laos: CT worked with the World Bank to devise a natural heritage tourism strategy for Lao PDR. Previous experience includes capacity building for tour operators and destination managers in Luang Prabang and Vientiane.
Lebanon: Large study with Mercy Corps and USAID to build local capacity in South Lebanon for alternative rural livelihoods by developing and implementing a sustainable tourism strategy in Hasbaya and Marjeyoun.

Malawi: CT is working on a project to connect youth and heritage through community-based tourism.
Malta
Montenegro: As well as devising a destination management plan for Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Biosphere, Benjamin designed and delivered a capacity building programme for tour operators and other tourism enterprises.

Pakistan: Studies for UNESCO and World Bank to develop capacity for tourism destination and protected area management.
Palestine: Several assignments in Palestine include heritage tourism, investment promotion and policy development for Jerusalem and the West Bank.
Poland: Amongst a range of tourism projects, Benjamin has conducted assignments and delivered strategies in Bielsko-Biała, Lidzbark Warmiński. and Poznan.
Russia: With experience from the Northwest to southern Siberia, Benjamin has worked with destinations that include Komi, Lipetsk, Perm, St Petersburg and Tver. CT has recently delivered a capacity building programme for UNWTO on international marketing.
Rwanda: Commissioned by the Office of the President, Benjamin devised a tourism diversification plan “Beyond Gorillas”, which devised ambitions targets for market development and investment and identified demand-led product development opportunities and new segments.
Saudi Arabia: CT has been advising a range of stakeholders on sustainable tourism development policies.
Scotland: Benjamin has been advising a range of stakeholders on COVID-19 recovery through CT and in association with colleagues in the Scottish Tourism Consultants Group. Since 2002, he has been working with clients across Scotland in all areas, including heritage tourism, market development and product development. Recently, CT has been advising on nature-based development, social enterprise and destination management.
Sierra Leone: Having earlier devised a post-conflict marketing strategy and then a series of safeguards for tourism in protected areas, Benjamin produced a post-crisis recovery plan following the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
Slovenia: Benjamin has designed and delivered innovative marketing campaigns for the national tourist board.
South Africa: Having first visited South Africa as a volunteer with Edinburgh Global Partnerships, Benjamin has subsequently advised on heritage walking trails in rural protected areas.
Sri Lanka: CT devised a demand-led product diversification plan and investment promotion strategy to recover established markets and develop new markets following a series of terrorist incidents, with a focus on sustainable tourism products.
Syria: Benjamin is working with a group of heritage organisations on the post-conflict development of heritage tourism as a driver of recovery.
Turkey: Since running large holiday programmes for leading tour operators, CT has been working with a number of rural destinations on plans for sustainable tourism development.
Uganda
Ukraine: Benjamin advised a number of destinations on post-conflict market recovery options.
Wales
Yemen: CT has been contributing to a number of heritage tourism projects, including the Soqotra Heritage Project, building on previous work representing Yemen Tourism in Europe and advising the Ministry of Tourism on strategy. Affiliate organisations include The British-Yemeni Society, Friends of Hadhramaut and Friends of Soqotra.
Zambia: CT is advising on the development of community-led heritage tourism at one of Zambia’s most important waterfalls.

Equality in Tourism asserts that gender is key to the sustainability of tourism.

Responsible Travel pioneered the marketing of sustainable tourism products in the UK, and has been actively promoting responsible tourism since 2001.

Safer Tourism promotes a “safe and secure environment” for the whole visitor economy. The seal is open to destinations and enterprises, large and small.

The SUN Program (SUNx) has identified the Climate Emergency as an existential threat to tourism and is advocating “climate friendly travel”.

Tourism Declares a Climate Emergency has brought together a range of tourism organisations that have adopted practical action plans to mitigate tourism’s negative impact on climate.

The Tourism Society is the professional membership body for everyone working in the visitor economy. Its Tourism Consultants Network promotes best practice in consulting through a Declaration of Good Practice.

Traveltech for Scotland is helping the tourism sector make a sustainable recovery from COVID-19 through technological innovation.
